Keep Those Resolutions!

healthAh, New Year’s resolutions. Those decisions we make to change something that we keep for about 2 weeks. Immediately after new year’s, the health food store takes me twice as long due to the crowds and I can’t even THINK about trying to step foot in the gym. However, all I have to do is wait about 2 weeks, and they both thin out. By February, they are almost as dead as they were before Christmas.

Why do we wait until Jan 2 to instill positive changes in our lives, only to abandon them shortly thereafter? Here’s my take: First of all, there is way too much hype associated with the New Year and making resolutions. Second, we go “all out” often being stricter or working harder than we should, which leads to the giving up just a short time later (as well as adding to stress). Finally, if we maintained our health during the holidays, we wouldn’t have so much to try and change!

My recommendation to you is to make small changes. Instead of committing to going from zero hours in the gym per week to 8, just start exercising. If you make it 3 times a week, celebrate that! Make your fitness fun and you are more likely to stick with it. If you hate the treadmill but use that because of your “resolutions” you will not stick to it. However, if you love to dance, decide to incorporate more of that into your life. Don’t change your eating habits so drastically that you no longer enjoy eating. Choose one thing a week and build upon it as each one becomes habit. For example if you want to eat more vegetables, choose one meal at a time to change!

health2Don’t wait until January 2 to start. If you feel like you need to improve on your health, start then! Also, don’t give up. Lots of people try hard and then when they aren’t perfect they either say “Oh I’ll start again next Monday” or give up altogether. If you fall back into an old habit, recognize it, forgive yourself and move on! During the holiday season, don’t throw all caution to the wind with the intention of “hitting it hard” afterwards. Instead, enjoy yourself with the goal to at least maintain where you are, rather than gaining only to have to lose it.

Studies show that it takes us 21 days to make ANY change become permanent, whether it’s exercising, learning a new way to deal with stress, or quitting smoking. Make those smaller changes, celebrate your successes no matter how small, and wait at least 3 weeks before clearing out my gym and health food store. You just may find out you want to keep going.


10 tips to get fit fast

The Internet is filled with plenty of lose weight and get fit gadgets that always end up wasting time and money. The only thing you need to start shedding those unwanted pounds is a pinch of discipline and these tips listed below.



1. Drink More Water
Drinking cold water burns more calories because your body has to work harder to warm the water before digestion     can occur.

2. Don’t eat right before bed
Eating right before you hit the hay will leave your body filled with calories and no activity to burn them off. After dinner take a stroll around the block and not only will you sleep better, but you will feel better too.

3. Pack your Lunch
Everyone could use some extra cash. Pack your lunch the night before and you will not only save your hard earned dough but you will also be making a healthier decision for lunch.

4. Take the long way around
When your faced with the decision to take the elevator or the stairs, choose the elevator. Don’t drive around the parking lot for an hour looking for a parking spot closest to the entrance of the store. Park in the last spot and walk. You will thank yourself at the end of the day if you make these small changes.

5. The Commercial Workout
Next time you are watching television and the commercials come on, take those couple of minutes to do a few exercises. Something as small as a few squats will show a tremendous amount of results if done frequently enough (3x a day).

6. The Phone Walk

Your mother calls and now your on the phone for at least an hour. Start walking around the house, clean something, organize the garage. These activities will not only burn calories but will enhance your productivity at home. (hands-free devices are best when doing these)

7. Chew Your Food
I catch myself eating sometimes like I am in a marathon. Chew your food before you swallow, this will help digest food quicker and burn more calories while your chomping away.

8. Fast Food Killer
Fast food is Insane! If you stop and think about how things are being cooked at a fast food restaurant, you may think twice about super sizing. Save your money and waistline and eat at the house. 9. They have an app for that
Use the technology that is at our fingertips. The app generation is here and there are many that actually help with the weight-loss dilemma. Counting calories, measuring how many steps walked in a day, the list can go on for days. Take a look and see what suits you.

10. Exercise
It is way easier than many make it out to be. Take at least 10 minutes out of your day to keep your body active. That may be a workout DVD, a push-up or sit-up routine, anything that gets the heart rate up. Start small but remain consistent and there will definitely be results in your future.
