Havening Therapy

herbMore and more people nowadays suffer from stress, anxiety, depression, mental trauma, and other mental disorders. Symptoms and conditions like panic attacks, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder are all types of anxiety. These problems are quite common, can affect people of all ages, and can range from mild to severe.

Experts believe that anxiety can have a number of different causes. While some people are susceptible to mental disorders due to genetics, others simply cannot handle stress that well. Anxiety can also be caused by physical conditions such as the lack of oxygen, or by medical conditions and the use of drugs. Trauma, on the other hand, is the result of an extremely negative event in someone’s life such as rape, domestic violence, or the death of a loved one. The good thing is that all mental disorders like the ones described above are treatable conditions and can be managed. Common treatments include seeing a therapist, as well as certain lifestyle changes such as following a healthy diet, getting proper sleep, exercising, and meditating.

What all of these treatments have in common is that they require a significant amount of time in order for the patient to start experiencing any positive changes, not to mention the dedication on behalf of an already mentally unwell person. Recently, however, a much more effective method has been discovered. Havening technique, as they call it, is very simple and helps reducing anxiety and depression by changing the way memories are kept or recalled in someone’s brain.

The Havening Method is an alternative therapy, first introduced by Ronald Ruden, a US neuroscientist. It is essentially a system of scientific procedures based on evolutionary biology which uses the sensory input of human touch as its main therapeutic means. That is called the Havening Touch and is usually applied gently to the upper arms, palms, as well as around the eyes of the patient. Human touch triggers a response of safety in the brain. The goal is for the therapist to distract the brain in order for it to displace the negative recalled event from working memory and ultimately prevent it from resurfacing.  The Havening techniques are powerful tools used to treat the consequences of pre-set distressing memories in the brain.

Experts like Paul McKenna have used Havening technique on thousands of people and the results have been outstanding. Studies have proven that Havening is most effective in treating depression and sadness, as well as minimising stress, trauma, and compulsion. Compared with Neuro-linguistic programming and talking therapies, Havening can yield quicker results and cure multiple issues in one go.

Depending on the nature and magnitude of the situation, the procedure can take place with the guidance of a certified professional or by oneself. However, we always recommend the use of a professional mental health care provider who is certified in the Havening technique and will be able to tackle any issues that may appear.
